🪪 Identicon Generator
Turn any text into a 5x5 symmetric identicon avatar. Same input always produces the same icon — great for default user avatars.
About the Identicon Generator
An identicon is a visual hash: a unique, deterministic avatar generated from a piece of text. This tool hashes your input with a custom 32-bit hash function, then uses the bits to paint a 5×5 grid that's mirrored left-to-right for a symmetric, recognizable shape. The same input always produces the same icon and color.
How it works
- The input string is hashed using a deterministic 32-bit hash (FNV-1a inspired).
- The first 15 bits of the hash determine which of the 15 cells in the left half (3 columns × 5 rows) are filled.
- The grid is mirrored to produce a 5×5 symmetric pattern.
- Three more bytes of the hash set the HSL color of the filled cells.
How to use
- Type any text — email, username, project name, etc.
- Pick a pixel size for the canvas.
- Toggle the background on/off.
- Click Generate to render, or Download PNG to save the image.
Frequently asked questions
Is the same input always the same icon? Yes. The hash is deterministic, so identical text always produces identical icons.
Is my input sent anywhere? No. The hash and rendering all happen in your browser.
Can I use these icons commercially? Yes. Generated identicons are yours to use freely.
